Norse mythology and the universe as seen by the Vikings contain all sorts of different worlds and mythological beings. Names to fire the imagination, such as Midgard, Asgard, Utgard and Niflhel. Giants, gods and monsters. Many legends and sagas were told.

Start with the Viking's Tree of Life

The people of the Viking age are thought to have seen the world like a kind of round plate or disc, at the middle of which stood an enormous tree – Yggdrasil, the tree of life.



Frigg is the Queen of Asgard and the highest of the goddesses.


The connection with the life-giving fruit makes Idun a goddess of the erotic, sexuality and offspring.


One interpretation of Heimdall’s name is “The one who shines over the world”


Freyja wears a jewellery called Brisingamen that was the most beautiful in the world.


Skadi is a mysterious figure, with a masculine name and similarities to the god Ull.


Odin’s two ravens Hugin and Munin (thought and memory) fly around the world and report back what they see.

Thor is temperamental, with red hair and bushy eyebrows.
